Iron Age Brewood is real
At Engleton Lane, Oxford Archaeology excavated 44 pits extending for at least 205 metres. Charcoal from one pit dated to 370–190 cal BC, supported by early/middle Iron Age pottery.3
Brewood, an alleged Iron Age highway, and the difference between a good story and a tested one. A road is said to have crossed the Staffordshire landscape south of Watling Street before Rome arrived. It is an attractive claim — and a perfect opportunity to ask how historical knowledge is actually built.
The safest starting point is to separate three things that are easily blended together: a claimed prehistoric road, excavated Iron Age activity, and a probable Roman subsidiary road through the same broad landscape.

J. E. Gordon Cartlidge traced a “Celtic road” in 1937 through Brewood, Somerford and Standeford towards Wall. His reconstruction is a historical hypothesis, not an excavated Iron Age road.2
The Staffordshire HER records the probable course of a Roman road between Crateford and Standeford Green, possibly surviving as earthworks through Somerford Park.6
A repeated claim is not the same as independent evidence. The task is to follow the statement backwards, identify what was actually observed, and then ask whether later archaeology confirms, modifies or contradicts it.
What exactly is being asserted — road, date, route, settlement, battle?
Is the statement based on excavation, an old map, a place-name, local memory or another website?
A nearby Iron Age feature does not automatically date a road beside it.
Does the route make practical sense for water, gradient, destinations and movement?
If the evidence supports “possible”, do not rewrite it as “proved”.
A modern account of Pennocrucium states that an Iron Age highway ran parallel to and south of Watling Street, linking the Wrekin with Brewood and Crateford before continuing east towards Letocetum at Wall.1 The wording sounds definite. The first task is to ask where that certainty came from.
The road is presented as an Iron Age highway, with a defined sequence of places.
Cartlidge traced what he called a “Celtic road” through the landscape using surviving lanes, metalled stretches, place-name arguments and route continuity.2
Modern excavation can test individual parts of the landscape — but it has not yet securely dated the whole Wrekin–Brewood–Wall line to the Iron Age.
Cartlidge's route ran from the Shifnal area towards Bishops Wood, Kiddemore Green and Oakley, then into Brewood, past Somerford Hall to Standeford and Latherford, before continuing via Cheslyn Hay, Landywood and Brownhills to Wall. On the next page he explicitly asked whether the Romans knew and used this “Celtic road”, and proposed that a later Roman line was built on higher ground.2
In 2019 evaluation trenches at Engleton Lane found nine large pits. A larger excavation in March 2020 followed the feature and revealed 44 pits extending for at least 205 metres on a slightly sinuous south-west to north-east alignment towards the River Penk.3
The alignment was physically exposed and recorded, not inferred from a map or aerial line.3
Charcoal from a lower fill produced this calibrated range at 95.4% confidence. Pottery from another pit was compatible with an early/middle Iron Age date.3
Pit alignments of this kind are generally interpreted as symbolic or territorial divisions rather than physical barriers. No evidence showed that these pits held posts.3
Once Rome arrives, the evidence changes. Pennocrucium develops at a major nodal point on Watling Street, the Engleton villa occupies the landscape south-west of it, and the Staffordshire HER records subsidiary Roman routes around the same corridor.456
The small Roman town lay astride Watling Street. Historic England describes the wider complex as a strategic location and nodal point in the Roman road system, with routes towards Chester, Wroxeter, Greensforge and perhaps Metchley.4
The villa south-west of Pennocrucium was occupied from the 2nd to 4th centuries. Its excavator also recorded a boundary meeting an old road that local tradition called “Celtic” — useful evidence for an old route, but not a secure prehistoric date.57
A modern desk-based assessment reproducing the Staffordshire HER describes the probable Roman road from Crateford to Standeford Green and says it may survive as earthworks through Somerford Park.6
If an established east–west road really ran through Brewood, why would Roman surveyors create another major road only a few miles to the north?
This is where landscape history becomes problem-solving. We should not answer by assuming Roman engineers were irrational; we should ask whether the two routes served the same purpose.
Cartlidge himself proposed in 1937 that the Romans later superseded part of the old route with a road on higher ground.2 That is an interesting early hypothesis, but it remains something to test rather than repeat. The strongest modern observation is simpler: Roman road evidence exists within the southern landscape as well as on Watling Street.
A continuous engineered prehistoric road ran Wrekin–Brewood–Wall and Rome simply abandoned it. The present evidence does not securely date that entire line to the Iron Age.
Parts of a pre-Roman movement corridor survived and were improved or absorbed into the Roman road network. This would explain ancient route continuity without requiring every surviving lane to be Iron Age.
Iron Age communities organised and moved through this landscape; Rome imposed Watling Street as a strategic trunk road while retaining or developing subsidiary southern routes. The precise prehistoric ancestry of each segment remains open.
There is no exposed Iron Age road at Brewood waiting to be walked, and the Engleton pits were archaeological features revealed during development. What survives is a landscape of route-lines, historic lanes, field boundaries and buried archaeology.
The pit alignment fixed genuine Middle Iron Age activity on the north-eastern edge of Brewood, running towards the Penk. Its value is evidential rather than monumental: the pits are not a visible visitor attraction.3
The Victoria County History records a road from Brewood that formerly joined the main road at Standeford, passing close to Somerford Hall, before part was closed in the late 18th century.8 That proves historic route continuity, not an Iron Age date.

We cannot currently demonstrate that a continuous Iron Age highway ran from the Wrekin through Brewood to Wall. What we can demonstrate is a Middle Iron Age landscape boundary at Brewood, a later Roman villa, a major Roman transport node at Pennocrucium, and probable Roman subsidiary roads through the southern corridor.
The older road hypothesis therefore survives — but with its label changed. It is no longer a fact to repeat. It is a question to test. And that change is not a failure of the story; it is the moment when research becomes history.
