Road classes

On the frontier, roads weren’t all equal. Some were state routes; others were local links between small sites. The Cumbrian coastal chain is best understood as a network of shorter links feeding fortlets, towers, and bigger forts like Maryport, rather than a single imperial “highway”.

Viae publicae: state routes linking major centres; maintained under imperial authority.
Viae militares: strategic military routes supporting forts and rapid movement.
Viae vicinales: local roads/lanes connecting communities, estates, and minor installations.
